More about Basingstoke

When most people think of Basingstoke, they think of that new town off the M3 a Hampshire town with a thriving global businesses, excellent transport connections and great shops. It may therefore come as a surprise that in recent years Basingstoke has been rated as the 3rd fastest growing town in the UK and 7th most affluent.

However, there is more to Basingstoke than first meets the eye. When you’ve shopped till you’ve dropped, why not look a little deeper into Basingstoke’s history?   Did you know Jane Austen, one of the most famous novelists in the world, was born in Steventon, near Basingstoke. Not only did she live in Steventon for more than half her life, she also drafted her celebrated novel, ‘Pride and Prejudice’, while living in the area.  It is thought that Jane visited the town of Basingstoke for everything from shopping to dancing, which would have had a major influence on her life and writing.  She moved house often living in other market towns and cities such as Winchester and Southampton.

Have you heard of the fashion brand Burberry?

Thomas Burberry the founder was a Basingstoke man – Burberry, the 160 + year-old global fashion brand with a very distinct British attitude was the brainchild of a Basingstoke man. Thomas Burberry was an apprentice draper from Basingstoke, who at the age of 21 established a process for waterproofing yarn and cloth after a chance conversation with a shepherd. Recognising that the shepherd’s clothing had seemingly become waterproof through contact with lanolin, Thomas Burberry invented a breathable waterproof fabric for outdoor clothes. The first Burberry store opened in Basingstoke on Winchester Street in 1856 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Steele & Co have always been conscious of the impact the services we provide have on our environment, whether that impact is from the diesel truck engines or from the materials we use to undertake a move. Having recently undertaken a review of our business we have found room for improvement and embarked on a fleet replacement programme together with a review of what materials we use for conducting a removal. We are also pleased to be able to offer clients the opportunity to reduce their removals carbon foot print by planting a tree via the Woodlands Trust.
